I hate that awkward phase where you start checking out a new fandom and you don't know the lingo, shorthand, and tropes for it yet. It makes it weird to search for things.

Also, after thinking about it, I have had to readapt to ST:TOS lingo probably three tines now over the past 23 years.  Though I much prefer just hitting someone's rec list and clicking on a fic than the 1980s  very long wait for a print fanzine you mailed out for from an underground fan connection you met at a comic shop!

musing

I think I really really hate third person narrative present tense. And there are way more fanfics out there using that style than there than before.

Also, I cannot pinpoint why I hate it.  I think it makes me feel like I'm removed from the story rather than part of the action.
Okay, now my facebook page is getting annoying. All my family and friends that give two poops about hockey are not suddenly The. Greatest. Hockey. Fans. Ever.    Please. I'm sure that happens to everyone!

Well the rest of our teams have been doing squat lately, so I'll take the possible Stanley Cup, please.

FYI I am also a Sox fan, not a Cubs fan since I am a southsider it was indoctrined. I stopped watching when they went on strike the first time. (I keep saying I will with hockey, but I haven't yet!)  watched the Bulls religiously though the eighties and nineties, and once you've lived though an era like Jordan, it's all EH. My dad  now lives next to the Chicago Fire stadium, so we've been to a few games there. Superfun! I wish our country loved soccer a little more and actually called it FOOTBALL.

I have been superbusy, been trying to read Sid's  Listening Ears without kids destroying the house so it's about 20 minutes in the evening before spousal unit is wondering what is taking me so long, HA!
Onto the Kings. Though I have to say that series against the Wings was rough.  Second only to watching the game, I love how all the food places around here have 'Blackhawk' deals for pizza and wings and other stuff.

Of course, I am jaded from the strike, but when your team is winning, sometimes it's easy to forget that bit.

The kids had a pep rally in school for the Blackhawks, and I realized only one son has a T-shirt in this house.  the others only have a jersey and I have authentic home and away jerseys for Chelios which I can't wear because after he played for the Hawks, he went to the Redwings for like 9 years and so can't wear that one!

Being a Chicago sports fan can be such a PITA sometimes.  And I can't afford Hawks tickets anyway- I go to Chicago Wolves and Rockford Icehogs games.
This is nuts. Heat on. Air on. Heat on again today. My sinuses hate me right now.

And thus ends this completely pointless post.
Usually I am asleep by now, but this thunderstorm weather is keeping me awake. Baby isn't sleeping though the night yet. Coffee gets me through the day.

I actually had a chance to read fic! YEA!    I wish I owned some sort of device where I could read stuff online while hanging out on the couch or in bed. I'm tied to the desktop and that's not fun.
oh, hai thar, I have just been blindsided by an unexpected canon het pairing. How long has that been for me where I find one of those and NOT when I multi-ship a character?

It's Josh/Donna from The West Wing.  See?  Wow.  I know nothing about the fandom of that show or the ship wars or anything as I was in Stargate and Trek TOS and Harry Potter and I think the Real Ghostbusters and - what was that, back in the early 2000- possibly some X-men fic consumption at that time.

I was still buying fanzines by mail in1999. I am a slow adapter.

But anyway, this is a round-about way of saying I am now going to have to look through old-fic for this pairing. I bet it was a geocites era thing. Hmmm.

Meanwhile, do I dare hope to see a resurgence of old school Jack/Daniel fic thanks to the actors clearly enjoying their recent time hanging out with fans? I really need some plotty, hopeful, AU or positive fic capturing the vibe.

These are the times  I wish I knew how to write because I come up with a lot of stuff for Jack/Daniel Stargate, Daniel/Sam stargate and TOS Kirk/spock. I can imagine it but not articulate it with finesse.
You are seeing me post.

This is my test post to play with some settings that I can look at while not signed in.

How exciting things are around here.
This weather is weirding me out.  It should not be nearly 90 here during March.  I have spent the last few days doing everything I can outside though because I am stir crazy. I still want my normal spring back!
Holy crap!  I just signed up with Netflix again and saw that both SG1 and Star Trek TOS are streaming.   I made this joking new year's resolution that I would rewatch both this year since it's been a while (much longer for that particular Trek).  Now I have no excuse!

Everyone kept telling me that Netflix went downhill and  had no content except old TV shows.  That's what sold me on it again!  In the '80s we had one TV and I had to watch whatever my parents watched in the evening, but I made it home from school to watch The Real Ghostbusters and Ducktales. (And then Rescue Rangers and Tale Spin in following years.  TMNT was always on Saturday morning.)

I started working after school evenings and joining clubs in the 1990s - I am a '94 high school grad-  and just didn't have a chance to watch a lot of things.

There's a lot of stuff out there that I only have general knowledge of or have only seen a few episodes of that I can now watch on netflix.

So yea for old stuff!
I was thinking about sprucing up the layout and adding icons, and then I decided why bother right now when I'm going to add a paid journal soon and have more options. It's kind of annoying to my eye right now though. Doesn't feel like "MINE" yet.

I miss using a journal.  I have spent the last couple of years mostly doing drive by posts on forums, but it isn't the same.  Sometimes you just need a place to braindump and not really worry if anyone is reading or commenting or if you've contributed thoughtfully to a conversation.  Sometimes ya just need to get it out and get on with it.

Hmmm, I probably could add icons though.
Does that mean if 5 people use our desktop and we've all sent email to eachother at one point and we all have the same last names, this new scenerio is going to think we're all the same person?   Because I totally have the same exact search patterns on youtube as my 12 year old. /sarcasm.
This one is draggingly slow.  I guess I was spoiled.   It takes ages to load a page and forget about images.    ARGH.  Now I'm getting, "Some gmail features failed to load due to an internet connectivity problem."  I need to see my email, please. It's been 4  days.

Hmm, I wonder if it's the wireless router? I don't have my desktop hooked up right now and am relying on my desktop, but this router is older.

So for those who know the chicagoland area, for the moment, I am living about 7 miles from the University of Chicago.  I have grand plans on prancing around the The Oriental Institute in my floppy Daniel hat and taking pictures.

It's a beautiful campus over there.  It's too bad they didn't have any major I was interested in and they weren't so close to home.  I have attended colleges that cost nearly as much, but were not as pretty.

I think I am an oddball anyway, because I LOVE visiting college campuses. I love to see if they've integrated their biology, horticulture, or even botany programs into the landscaping. And I love seeing the traditions and buildings and feeling the atmosphere and just how they use their space in general.   Some have little museums as part of their campuses too.  I don't have the time now, but I can fully see myself adding a day of vacation time to visit a campus in an area I'm visiting when I'm older.

I like roadside museums too.  Love the ridiculousness of it all!

Now I wonder if this will post or if will have to save to draft again due to slow internet?
Don't feel bad, Dreamwidth. I haven't posted anywhere else other than the occasional family facebook post in the last few years. I have to see who is still knocking around in Stargate, and what exists in some of the new shows I picked up along the way.

Yea! to everyone who scribbled on my new journal! I see the communities are blooming like a great big honking flower, so that totally rocks. I think I shall stalk the people in-the-know for the fandoms and hobbies I like so I can find my niche.

I believe I shall invest in this journal a bit since I rather like there not being ads. Plus, I might make myself a second journal for very detailed nature observations. That way I can keep all the fandom stuff unlocked and accessible, but not scare the crap out of people just looking for details on a birding session.

Now I'm off to find some icons.
'Scuse me while I'm ass over teakettle on Dreamwidth.   Not sure how I'm going to organize anything, but I'm doing a bit of a hunt-and-peck for people I know and interesting folks I don't know as of yet.

My only other journal is on LJ, and that was new, so I'm still finding my feet there as well.  I am dicranum in both places.

So far my plan is to subscribe to all the users and communities that interest me, and I'll figure out how to juggle the access levels and the crossposting if needed later.

***

Hope to get to the profile at some point, perhaps find a few communities, figure out where the treasure's buried- that sort of thing.

I'm kind of finding this a bit like when I have a new sketchbook and am afraid to draw in it so as not to ruin it's pristine condition.  A wonderful art teacher told me to scrbble all over the first page; it helps me immensely.  So here I am, scribbling over my first Dreamwidth page...
